One of the intimidating things about entering the “art community” is fear of rejection or fear of criticism. Let’s face it, it’s hard to put a piece of your heart and soul out into the world on a platform like Facebook and say… OK… what do you think?!
Fortunately, I have discovered for as many of those hyper-critical, you will never be good enough groups, there is one that is full of creative, inspiring, embracing individuals. Through one of these groups, I was fortunate enough to meet our next featured creative entrepreneur!
So, without further ado… Meet Iris Fritschi-Cussens!
1) Please tell us a little about yourself and your creative business.
Hi I’m Iris! I’m a mixed media artist from London, UK. I run Iris Impressions Art. I love creating shabby mixed media paintings and working in my art journal. Through my art, website & videos I want to encourage and inspire everyone with a creative heart to release their true potential and do what they really love.
2) How did you happen to start your own business? Was there a particular motivation?
One day it hit me: I can actually do what I love. I had been approaching things the wrong way ‘round, I thought I needed to do a job to earn money so that I could do what I loved eventually, in the future, when I’m retired! (etc) The truth is though, I can do what I love first and foremost now and the day job I have will support me as much as it needs to until my art business is able to do that fully. Simple realization that resulted in a massive change in my attitude!
3) Where do you find the creative inspiration for the new things you bring to life?
Since starting to paint I have been noticing more. I notice the colours of the trees, the flowers in the park, the pattern on the floor of the underground trains, the way the wind blows, the shapes of iron cast fences, the sounds that you hear when you really listen. It doesn’t translate directly into my art, but these creative tidbits embed themselves into my consciousness and they give life to an enthusiasm and excitement inside me that I am able to put into my art.
4) What would you like people to know about your wonderful creations?
When I create my art I usually include a message that I very much need to hear myself. I never knew my father and my mum died when I was a teenager, so there is a lot of hurt there. There weren’t and aren’t always people to tell me the things I need to hear in order to live a full life and reach my potential.
It’s been tough to try and tell myself the things which really are your parents’ job to tell you (it gives rise to a lot of feelings of resentment). Things such as self-worth, determination, feeling unconditionally loved, being able to deal with disappointment. I found that through my art I am able to pass on these messages. First and foremost these are messages to myself, but I believe that whatever our individual past we have a lot of shared experiences and feelings, so I have found that these messages also resonate with other people.
5) When you are not busy working, what do you like to do to recharge?
I have two beautiful little boys, Jupiter (3) and Zephyr (1). They have given me so much enthusiasm and love for life, I am a completely different and better person for having them. I don’t think I would be on this exciting artistic journey if I didn’t have kids.
American TV shows are one of my guilty pleasures!! Although not so guilty nowadays as I often create are while having a programme on in the background. I’m a major Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Joss Whedon fan and I’m currently enjoying shows like Girls, Breaking Bad and Modern Family.
6) Where can we find you on the internet?
