Creative Mompreneurs: Sweet and Woodsy Aromatherapy

I have had the good fortune of knowing many creative, crafty ladies.  Many, many of them are moms and many many of them have their own businesses!

It struck me that I was hogging these lovely ladies all to myself and needed to set a good example and share them with you!

So begins a new series of posts about some wonderfully creative Mom entrepreneurs.  Hopefully you love what they are doing and will take time to visit them in their respective homes around the internet.

Now, without further ado, meet Mindy of Sweet and Woodsy Aromatherapy!

1)      Please tell us a little about yourself and your creative business.

My name is Mindy MacLaren; I am a nationally certified aromatherapist and the founder of Sweet & Woodsy Aromatherapy.  S&WA is a home-based business, offering handmade essential oils-based products for all ages as well as non-toxic household cleaning products.

2)    How did you happen to start your own business? Was there a particular motivation?

I was motivated to start my own business while I was still getting my aromatherapy certification at Aromahead Institute, School of Essential Oil Studies, in 2008.  I was in a very inspiring environment and began developing business ideas while there.  I began using essential oils-based products a few years before I became certified in aromatherapy.  It led me to realize just how much we are exposed to chemicals just about everywhere we go in our modern day lives.  Many of us, including me, don’t even really notice because we are so used to certain things, like household cleaners.  My internal motivation came from the desire to create awareness about this and to offer the natural alternatives that I know work.

I come from a family of entrepreneurs: my grandfather, along with his two older brothers, and both of my parents, have started and run successful businesses.  So, starting my own business wasn’t too much of a leap, in terms of career direction.  I have access to experienced role models and get to pick their brains for advice!

3)    Where do you find the creative inspiration for the new products you bring to life?

My inspiration, at first, was to create healthy baby care products for the twin girls I was carrying at the time.  So, I would have to give them some of the credit for helping me realize my first few products!  Aside from the girls’ influence, I am always trying to make natural things inspired by commercial products I see in stores or salons.

4)    What would you like people to know about your wonderful products and services?

I am trained in aromatherapy as well as in esthetics (skin care), so I have the knowledge required to make both safe and effective products.  Ingredient quality is of the utmost importance to me; to that end, I try to use organic ingredients whenever possible and essential oils that are tested for purity.

Using aromatherapeutic products for say, cleaning the house, is fun!  Essential oils work on several levels, so when you are killing germs in the bathroom with an Orange cleaner, for example, you are also boosting your mood and your immune system.  It feels good to know you are using a product that is effective while still being healthy for your whole family as well as for the Earth!

5)    When you are not busy working, what do you like to do to recharge?

I love to be outside with my girls, discovering things in nature; I take a lot of pictures, and I enjoy practicing yoga…but don’t do it enough!  And, I do love thinking about where I want to take Sweet & Woodsy!

     6)   Where can we find you on the internet?
